Here it is…I’m finally writing about my trip to San Diego and Comic Con 2009! My sister and I ventured down there (Yay, road trip!) to check it out for the very first time this past
July.
Here you can see me driving (I know! Taking pictures and driving is a “no, no”, but I swear it was a straight empty stretch of road!) – and my sister was an excellent navagator! And that’s her on the right in the trolly ride to downtown San Diego.
We are self-admittedly geeks in our own way. I remember fondly staying up late with my sister (when we lived together) to watch the Adult Swim cartoons on Cartoon Network (I love Robot Chicken!). And I have been known to spend an entire day playing my favorite RPG! But after our time at Comic Con and seeing just all that goes on there, I have determined that I am not 100% geek. This is not to put anyone down that was there – not at all! I proudly admit that I’m (roughly) 1/3 geek on any given day. Some days this fraction increases. For instance, I am a huge fan of all things Star Wars…
Ok, so maybe when it comes to Star Wars the term “fanatic” might be more appropriate… You do have to admit there are some talented people out there that can make these things though:
This was a life-size Clone Trooper made entirely out of Legos!!
This guy did a pretty nice job on his Bobba Fett costume too…
I am also a big fan of just about anything that would fall into the science fiction/fantasy category. I couldn’t resist kicking back in the Captain’s chair for a minute or two (we did do an awful lot of walking around after all!)…
I didn’t entirely know what to expect before I got there – it turns out there was even more than I thought. There were exhibitors from comic books, sci-fi/fantasy book publishers, video game companies, movies, television shows, toys, collectibles, art schools and thousands upon thousands of fans! Did I mention it was a 4-day event? And as the event progressed, each day brought more fans dressed up in all manner of costumes (there was a masquerade event on Saturday night). Generally much goofiness and fun was had by all…
You can see the line we stood in all day (no joke!) to get into the Masquerade Showcase, and an Alice in Wonderland troupe with a random remote controlled R2 unit.
There was a live person in that Bumblebee (Transformers) costume – it looked pretty akward. And the box of crackers…just too silly to pass up!
This was a view from the convention center of the Gaslamp District in San Diego – maybe next time we’ll get to explore that too. It was a unique experience to say the least – we had a blast and got home safely, but completely exhausted! I’d definitely go back and maybe next time I’ll have to come up with a costume of my own too…just for fun. :)
What a great pair you two are :)
Looks like a great road trip and I am honestly jealous you got to go to Comic Con!!
Love all the photos! My favorite is the 'Captain Rogers' shot:) Thanks so much for posting them. What a fun trip for both of you.
That looks like a fun time! I've never been to one of those comic convention thingies. I must investigate next time there's one happening in my area!
YAY! Comic Con, I wish I was there too T_T
I am soooo jealous.
Glad you have fun, thanks for sharing ^_^
Looks like a really fun time!
Last night we finished watching the 6th Star Wars movie, we started at 1 and did them all and love them.
And I went to look to see if hopefully they would be making another 3 movies, but so far I don't see anything, BUT what I did see…
They are making a tv show that would bridge the gap between the first 3 and the original 3 movies! YAHOO Might never happen but we can hope!
Oh and P.S. if you like Sci Fi, they are making a remake of the 1983 / 1984 movies and tv show called "V" – will be premiering on November 3rd.
~Pam
Pam – it was loads of fun! And since we got the 4-day pass, we were able to attend preview night – where we saw the full-length premier episode of "V"! :) It looks like it could be good. I'll have to remember to watch it when it starts up.
Jessica – Wow lucky duck! lol I have the 1983 / 1984 movies and tv show on dvd and we really liked them, so I am hoping the new show will be really good!
